Unfiltered:&#38;nbsp;Youth Reflections&#38;nbsp;on Mental Health&#38;nbsp;
&#38;amp; Wellnessbook design by Brittany Garuk

This book serves as lasting documentation of the work generated by the participants of YouthLAB 2019/2020. In this program, high school students come together to become agents of change in their community by providing peer support. They learn about topics such as trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ2SIA+  issues, disordered eating, bullying, and relationship violence, and use expressive arts therapy to create art and writing in response to what they have learned.

ProcessI met with the youth and program coordinators to brainstorm what they wanted the book to communicate to readers (other youth). These questionnaires, along with discussion helped give me an idea of what they wanted.

I met with them a second time to show varying potential ideas and aesthetics, and get feedback on which direction to go in. I got very specific feedback that helped me to ensure the final product reflected their desires for the book.

	ColourVibrant, colourful pages were used to make the book feel more alive and approachable. They offset the otherwise formal tone set by the typography and the seriousness of the content. 
These colours were chosen intentionally to compliment the diverse collection of artwork in the book.

TypographyThe entire book is set in Adobe Jenson Pro. Red is used sparingly to accent numbers and glyphs; for example to create a table of contents within the letter to the reader at the beginning of the book, as seen below.

Fathers for Thought Overdose Prevention Project

Fathers for Thought is a men’s support group at the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House.&#38;nbsp;Their Overdose Prevention Project primarily serves to reach people in the DTES with positive messages from the group, with the goal of harm reduction.&#38;nbsp;

	Outreach CardsThese outreach cards were designed to offer support to residents of the DTES who may not be connected to conventional institutions and services. The cards display group members’ artwork and life saving messages of support. Fathers for Thought members can give these cards to their friends and people they meet in their neighbourhood.

The goal was to make the cards brightly coloured, outrageous and decorative in hopes that they would be something that recipients would want to keep. By either putting it up a the wall in their room or carrying in their wallet, the card can act as a reminder and comfort every time they see it and read the message.&#38;nbsp;I used digital collage in order to showcase the wide variety of artwork by Fathers for Thought, and made the images monotone to unify the different styles.


ProcessWorking with the group in brainstorming and feedback sessions helped to ensure that I was able to better understand their ideas and intentions for the project. During one of the later sessions it was suggested that we use colours from the Medicine Wheel for the outreach cards. I never would have thought of this, but it has meaning to a large proportion of the DTES, making it a great idea in designing for that audience. This is just one example of the value of the participatory sessions. Although it may not be instantly recognizable, I believe that applying these colours to some of the cards embeds value in the design and helps to better represent the group that I am designing for.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

FlyersAt a brainstorming session, a Fathers for Thought member questioned the idea of spending so much money on printing these outreach cards. As they would be in colour and printed on a nice cardstock, the amount of cards produced would be limited compared to the amount that could be printed if we approached the project differently. After a discussion, we decided to create black and white designs that could be printed off 4 to a page on the Neighbourhood House printer. That way the group could also hand out these flyers whenever they want without worrying about using up the project budget. These flyers serve as a more immediate reminder and are unlikely to be kept, but they still get the message out there!

	IdentityAfter the outreach cards were designed, the group decided to have an identity created for the Fathers for Thought Overdose Prevention Project. This was used by the group to make apparel for members, and may be used on future outreach materials.
	WordmarksFathers for Thought Overdose Prevention Project is a very long name, so I chose to create two very simple wordmarks. I used different weights of Leitura News, which I had already been using on the outreach cards, making it a sort of anchor for the branding.

for the display type on the cards, consistency wasn’t a priority since the project did not revolve around marketing⁠—it was all about using bold, emotive type

	ApparelT-shirt and button designs were made for the group to use for their apparel. Fathers for Thought frequently screenprints their own t-shirts and has access to a button maker, so I made sure that they would be able to use the designs however they needed.

Right to Food Zine is an independent media source that provides valuable information on the human right to food, and strives to be a place for community building in Vancouver’s DTES.&#38;nbsp;

My goal when designing this zine, was to mix in some DIY aesthetics&#38;nbsp;(without compromising readability) and make it fun to flip through!

	Samantha Matthews created some beautiful, vibrant artwork for the cover. As it spans the front and back, we get to enjoy seeing all the detail and trace of the artists hand.
	Issue 25: final thoughts
This is the last issue of the zine that I worked on as the primary designer. I am proud of this issue, it is my favourite both in content and in design. I used the collage method for stylized callouts that is also utilized in Issue 23. Along with the hand drawn cover art, the texture of the scanned pieces of paper reflects the physical, in-person experiences of our past zine meetings which have shaped Right to Food Zine in a significant way.

	Cyville Castro designed the cover of our summer issue based on ideas generated by community members—new growth was the concept.
	Issue 24: resiliency
This was the most challenging issue for us, as we were working on it when the pandemic hit North America. This time has impacted the way that we think about food, and exemplified the importance of the zine in advocating for food security and sovereignty.

	For the cover of this special colouring book edition we wanted to display a selection of coloured-in illustrations that are featured as line drawings inside. To accommodate the variety of styles I created a collage using these illustrations as well as images cut from magazines that relate to food or environment.


	Issue 23: the colouring book edition
Inspired from last issue’s cover (which the artist had mentioned wanting to make into a colouring page), we realized our whole zine could easily double as a colouring book. Since the inside of the zine is always printed in black and white, it made a lot of sense! We opted for limited photographs and tasked our illustrators with creating line drawings for each article. This format simply adds another level of engagement and interaction with the zine without sacrificing written content.


For this issue I wanted to experiement with other ways of making the zine read as a grassroots publication. I printed out some text elements of the zine and scanned them to get a DIY photocopied appearance while using friendly and fun typefaces.

	Barbara Reid created a beautiful illustration for the cover of this issue, inspired by conversations at a Zine meeting around the importance of salmon in local ecosystems.
	Issue 22: partnering with Sustenance Festival
Working with the Sustenance Festival allowed us to print more copies of this issue and reach a new audience. We were able to promote the zine at the festival and received a ton of positive feedback from attendees. Based on feedback that Issue 21 looked too polished, we decided to allow for more experimentation going forward. I chose to concentrate a little bit less on uniformity for this issue, played with different layouts, and experimented with typesetting and pairing.

	With the DTES NH community garden thriving, we wanted to feature it on the cover. As this was our Spring/Summer issue we took full advantage of the cover being printed in colour, using bright colours and highly saturated photos to give it a lively appearance.


	Issue 21: my first time designing the zine
When I joined the team I knew I wanted to take the design of the zine in a different direction. Communication throughout the the making of this issue was essential, as it was important to ensure the team was not just comfortable with the new approach, but actually supported it. Since the release of this issue, our determination to design the zine with these new intentions has been fully embraced by the team and our readers.


Since our submissions for this issue were much shorter than usual, I was able to give each piece more room in the zine than what was standard in past issues. This allowed me to highlight pullquotes and have ample space to place images complimentary to the writing, while giving the content room to breathe.

Downtown Eastside Speaks Up! is a publication made by LSU! to (1) share findings from their research on the challenges that the DTES community is facing and (2) explore grassroots social change.

When research is done in this neighbourhood, researchers rarely ever come back to share their findings with the people who they’ve surveyed. A key part of this project is that the survey was written &#38;amp; facilitated by community members, and this publication was made for the community. Amongst the statistics are quotes from community members who were surveyed, along with prompts written by LSU! members inviting the reader to reflect on what they want. The goal of the prompts is to encourage &#38;amp; empower readers to work with their neighbours to demand the changes they want to see happen.

Design Choices:
LSU! explored many different layouts and forms that the publication could take. Working with a small budget and keeping accessibility in mind, we ended up with a small booklet that is easy to distribute, bold, engaging, and honours both the beauty in this community as well as the challenges that residents are consistently burdened with.

This is my grad project, completed during the fourth year of my bachelors degree (2017-2018).


	Why don’t I talk about racism in Canada?While spending a semester in the US I noticed how frequently people around me were talking openly about racism. When I returned to Canada I became very aware that many of us do not actively acknowledge racism as a serious problem here in our own country. Why is this?


	Canada’s Hidden Racism is a video exploring perspectives and lived experiences of racism in Canada. Using existing documentation, the video seeks to challenge white Canadians with the prevalence, pain, and lasting effects of racism that we may be unaware of. Found footage, text, numeric data and narrative are employed in the video to engage an audience in a way that encourages reflection and questioning. Can this approach succeed in raising awareness and care?


	Methodology OverviewWe need to stop asking if racism is a problem here, and talk about why it is a problem here.
With this project, I wanted to create an awareness campaign that would show the overwhelming amount of pain caused by racism here in Canada, pointing at the excuse that multiculturalism gives us not to worry about it. My audience consists of Canadian adults who are unaware of the pervasiveness and abundance of racism in Canada, and don’t consider it to be a serious issue here. There is a lot that isn’t taught in schools about Canada’s history (like slavery), which contributes to the perception of ourselves as kind, polite Canadians. My campaign does not serve to educate about these issues but to introduce to the viewer the idea that there may be things they don’t know about our history, things that our national story denies.
Rather than trying to incentivize care (as many campaigns do), I am using the tactic of addressing barriers to change, as it is thought to be a more successful approach. My project is specifically aimed at the unawareness that privileged people have (due to many factors such as upbringing and colonialist, eurocentric education) which prevents us from seeing the problems that our fellow citizens are experiencing right before our eyes.

	Outcome In order to reach my audience, I decided to use video to integrate multiple modes of communication into one experience. I am not concerned with reaching people who have experienced racism, as they are surely aware of its effects and prevalence in Canada. For that reason, I use words like “us” and “we” to speak to white people (like me) who are lucky enough never to have been victims of racism.
I have used existing documentation of Canadians talking about their experiences with racism and how it has affected them. It is important to see the long-lasting effects that racism has, as this re-enforces the significance of the issue.
I hope to influence those who watch the video so that they walk away with something new to think about. If people take in the stories, information and implications about racism, and sit with it, carry it with them, revisit it, investigate it, and talk about it with their peers, they will become actively engaged in the issue. I believe it is the responsibility of every Canadian to care that the people around them are experiencing both crude and hidden racism, to witness it, and support them.

	Increased connectivity with digital platforms offers a convenient way for humans to interact with curated identities, values and social spheres. However increased engagement with our devices has led to an era where we can be more in touch with our screens than with human emotions. Our primary methods of communication often take the form of effortless cut-and-paste expressions that convey a reaction without personal reflection. As a result, the importance of our affectivity is neglected.

What if we lived in a society where intimacy was cared for? What could it look like if we were presented with a tangible intimization of emotion?

	Visualizing our Emotions
To understand the range of emotions we experience within a period of time, we all tracked and recorded our emotions on an hourly basis for one day. Afterwards we assigned each emotion with a colour, allowing us to visualize and reflect on the emotions we experienced.

Brittany GarukI am a freelance graphic designer located in Vancouver, BC, on unceded Coast Salish land. I obtained a Bachelor of Design from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2018, and majored in Communication Design.

I am passionate about working with others to push for positive changes in the communities in which I work. I have been lucky to work with some amazing people and nonprofit organizations including Pivot Legal Society (2023-present), Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (2019-present) and Family Services North Shore (2019-2020).Local small businesses I’ve worked with include Unified (2021-present), Predator Helmets (2021-present), and Daniel Chocolates (2022).
